Planters Garden Centre

In a text book case of successful business, Planters has grown in just 12 years from a roadside stall to a 50,000 square foot site turning over £2 million a year.

This bright and beautifully laid out centre now welcomes around a quarter of a million visitors a year to its range of attractions which cater for every aspect of garden leisure and a great deal more besides.

Caravan sales, a waterlife centre and a greenhouse outlet have all helped to strengthen a business which recognises that increasing numbers of people are looking to use their gardens as 'outside rooms' - a trend which has been steadily encouraged by a range of popular TV programmes including Ground Force and Home Front.

"In recent years our big growth area has been the sales of patio building materials and timber, but we also sell a wide range of plants and garden products as well as many complementary items including garden furniture, barbecues, gifts, Christmas decorations and fireworks," said Managing Director Gerald Ingram.

"We find that people view the centre very much as a place where they can come and spend their leisure time - they want to spend a couple of hours here and we do everything we can to make that time enjoyable and interesting," he said.

Planters has been a client of Philip Barnes & Co since opening at the Freasley site it still occupies today. The account is handled by Partner Chris Humphreys who provides a regular information resource to the company's accounting staff.

"We provide full end of year accounting and taxation services to Planters, and they also contact us whenever the need arises - whether that be queries on VAT or technical information about tax matters for example. We also offer the facility of business advice relevant to any changes they may be considering, which can include anything from investments to purchases. As an additional service, we handle personal tax matters as required," he said.
